Starting Treatment After an Accident
Being involved in a motor vehicle accident is disorienting enough without having to work out what to do next for your physical recovery. At PhysioLogix we treat MVA patients regularly and understand how the claim process works — so we can take the confusion out of the rehabilitation side while the rest of your claim is being sorted out.
You don't need to wait for your claim to be formally approved before starting physiotherapy. As long as you have submitted your claim to the Insurance Commission of WA and are aware a claim is in progress, you can begin treatment. If you have your claim number, there is no upfront cost — we invoice ICWA directly and there is no gap payment. If your claim number hasn't come through yet, you pay for your sessions upfront and are reimbursed once your claim is approved.
The sooner treatment begins after a motor vehicle accident, the better. Injuries from MVAs — particularly to the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine — respond significantly better to early, structured physiotherapy than to rest and waiting. Getting the right assessment and starting rehabilitation promptly is one of the most important things you can do for your recovery.
The injuries we most commonly see following a motor vehicle accident are whiplash and neck pain, lower back pain and shoulder injuries. Soft tissue injuries from car accidents can be slow to present and slower to resolve without the right treatment — which is why getting an accurate assessment early makes a significant difference to your recovery.
Whiplash and Spinal Injuries from Motor Vehicle Accidents
Whiplash is the most common injury we treat in MVA patients at PhysioLogix. It occurs when the head and neck are thrown rapidly forward and backward during impact, placing sudden and significant force through the cervical spine, surrounding muscles, and soft tissues. Symptoms range from neck pain and stiffness to headaches, shoulder pain, upper back tightness, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating — and they don't always present immediately after the accident.
What many patients don't realise is that whiplash frequently involves more than just the neck. The same mechanism of injury that affects the cervical spine often places load through the thoracic and lumbar spine as well, particularly in rear-end and side-impact collisions. Pain and stiffness in the mid and lower back following an MVA is common and should be assessed and treated as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program rather than in isolation.
Left untreated or poorly managed, whiplash and spinal injuries from MVAs can become chronic and significantly impact quality of life. With the right physiotherapy — starting early and progressing appropriately — the majority of patients recover fully.
How We Treat MVA Injuries
Your initial consultation at PhysioLogix is 40 minutes. We begin with a thorough conversation about the accident, the mechanism of injury, and your current symptoms — including any that may have developed in the days following the accident. We then conduct a detailed objective assessment of your cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine as relevant to your presentation, covering movement patterns, joint mobility, muscle function, and neurological signs where indicated.
Treatment is hands-on from the first session. Joint mobilisation and soft tissue release address joint restriction and muscle tightness directly, while dry needling is used where tissue is particularly guarded or stubborn to respond to conventional manual therapy. Both are used regularly in MVA presentations and are effective in reducing pain and restoring movement in the early stages of recovery.
Exercise rehabilitation runs alongside hands-on treatment throughout your program. Your exercise plan is built specifically around your injury pattern and progresses as your recovery advances. Every exercise is written up with photos, descriptions, sets, reps, and frequency so you understand exactly what you're doing and why between sessions.
For patients recovering from car accident injuries, we frequently incorporate Reformer Pilates into the rehabilitation process. It allows us to progressively rebuild strength and movement through soft tissue injuries without overloading structures that are still healing — particularly useful for neck and back presentations where load management is critical early on
We provide detailed progress reports to ICWA, other insurers, and legal representatives as required throughout your treatment in order to keep it as streamlined and hassle free as possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to wait for my claim to be approved before starting physiotherapy
No. As long as you have submitted your claim to ICWA and are aware it is in progress, you can begin physiotherapy at PhysioLogix. If you have your claim number, there is no upfront cost — we invoice the insurer directly. If your claim number hasn't been confirmed yet, you pay upfront and are reimbursed once your claim is approved.
What is ICWA and how does it relate to my MVA claim?
The Insurance Commission of Western Australia (ICWA) manages compulsory third party (CTP) insurance for motor vehicle accidents in WA. If you were injured in a road accident in WA, your physiotherapy treatment is likely covered through ICWA as part of your CTP claim.
How soon after the accident should I start physiotherapy?
As soon as possible. Early physiotherapy after a motor vehicle accident consistently produces better outcomes than delayed treatment. Don't wait until the pain becomes severe or your claim is fully processed — contact us and we can get your rehabilitation started.
My symptoms came on a few days after the accident — is that normal?
Yes. It is common for whiplash and spinal symptoms to develop gradually in the 24 to 72 hours following a motor vehicle accident rather than immediately. Delayed onset of symptoms does not make the injury any less legitimate or any less treatable.
Does physiotherapy only cover the neck after a whiplash injury?
Not at PhysioLogix. MVA injuries frequently affect the thoracic and lumbar spine as well as the cervical spine, and we assess and treat the full spinal picture as part of your rehabilitation program.
