Pre and Post Operative Physiotherapy in West Perth
West Perth physiotherapy for surgical recovery that goes beyond the basics. Thorough assessment, hands-on treatment, gym and reformer rehabilitation on-site, and support available outside of clinic hours when you need it
Prehab — Preparing Your Body Before Surgery
Prehabilitation — prehab — is physiotherapy in the weeks leading up to surgery with one goal: making your body as strong and capable as possible before the procedure begins. The evidence behind it is clear. Patients who enter surgery with better tissue capacity, stronger surrounding musculature, and greater joint mobility recover faster, regain function sooner, and generally have better surgical outcomes than those who don't.
Prehab at PhysioLogix is physiotherapist-led and built specifically around your upcoming surgery and your current physical baseline. We assess what needs to be strengthened, what range of motion needs to be improved, and what you need to understand about the post-operative period before you go in. It's a newer area of physiotherapy practice and one we're actively building — because the difference it makes to recovery timelines is significant and the approach is still underutilised in the Perth market.

Post-Operative Rehabilitation
Post-operative rehabilitation at PhysioLogix follows your surgeon's protocol from day one. That protocol exists for good reason — surgical timelines for weight bearing, range of motion milestones, and return to loading are specific to the procedure and the individual surgeon's technique. We work within that framework precisely, progress you through each stage when the protocol allows, and communicate with your surgeon or GP as required throughout.
What we add to that protocol is a rehabilitation environment most clinics don't have. The gym floor at PhysioLogix — squat rack, barbell, and weights — means that when your rehabilitation reaches the stage of functional loading, we can supervise that work in the same space as your physiotherapy treatment. You're not being sent to a commercial gym with a piece of paper. You're doing it here, under supervision, with the same physiotherapist who has been managing your recovery from the beginning.
For patients who find traditional home exercise programs difficult to adhere to — and adherence is one of the biggest drivers of post-operative outcomes — clinical reformer Pilates is available as an alternative or adjunct once the surgeon's protocol allows for it. The reformer offers a controlled, low-impact environment for progressive loading that works particularly well in the earlier stages of post-operative rehabilitation when full weight bearing or high load exercise isn't yet appropriate. It's not suitable for every patient or every surgery, but where it fits it significantly improves engagement and outcome.
Surgeries We Treat
The surgeries we most commonly support through pre and post-operative rehabilitation include knee reconstructions, shoulder surgery, hip surgery and spinal procedures. Pre-operative physiotherapy is equally important — patients who are stronger and more mobile going into surgery consistently recover faster on the other side
Knee — ACL reconstruction, total knee replacement, and patellofemoral procedures. ACL rehabilitation is a structured, progressive process with clear return-to-sport milestones. Knee replacement rehabilitation focuses on restoring full range of motion and functional strength to support daily activities and long-term joint health.
Hip — total hip replacement rehabilitation, focused on restoring mobility, strength, and confidence in movement within the post-operative protocol parameters.
Shoulder — rotator cuff repair and subacromial decompression. Shoulder post-operative rehabilitation requires careful progressive loading of the repaired tissue — too little and the repair doesn't strengthen adequately, too much too soon and you risk re-injury. The progression is specific and we follow the surgeon's timeline carefully.
Spine — discectomy and spinal fusion rehabilitation. Spinal surgery patients need structured guidance on movement, load management, and return to activity. We work closely within the surgeon's protocol to rebuild core stability and functional capacity progressively.
Other procedures — if your surgery isn't listed here, call us on 0450 075 955. We treat a wide range of orthopaedic and spinal procedures and will let you know whether we're the right fit for your rehabilitation.
f your surgery resulted from a workplace injury, treatment and rehabilitation may be covered under your Workers Compensation claim. If it followed a motor vehicle accident, you may be able to access rehabilitation under your car accident insurance claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral for post-operative physiotherapy at PhysioLogix?
No referral is required. Many patients self-refer after surgery — particularly those who are researching their rehabilitation options independently rather than taking a recommendation from their surgical team. GP referrals are also welcome. If your GP is looking for a reliable post-operative physiotherapy option in West Perth, we're available for those referrals directly.
Do you work with my surgeon's protocol?
Yes — always. Post-operative rehabilitation at PhysioLogix follows your surgeon's instructions precisely. If you have a copy of the protocol, bring it to your first appointment. If you don't have one, we can liaise with your surgeon or GP to obtain it.
When should I start post-operative physiotherapy?
As soon as your surgeon clears you to do so — which for most procedures is within the first one to two weeks following surgery. Early physiotherapy within the bounds of the protocol is consistently associated with better outcomes than delayed rehabilitation.
When should I start prehab before surgery?
Ideally four to eight weeks before your procedure, though any prehab is better than none. If your surgery is sooner than that, contact us and we will work with whatever time is available.
Can I use the reformer Pilates as part of my post-operative rehabilitation?
In some cases, yes. The reformer is introduced when your surgeon's protocol allows for it and when it's appropriate for your specific procedure and recovery stage. It works particularly well for patients who find traditional home exercise programs difficult to maintain consistently. We will discuss whether it's suitable for your situation at your first appointment.
